Mathematics

The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10. 

By studying mathematics, students learn to work mathematically – developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and communication skills.

The syllabus consists of the following strands:

• number and algebra
• measurement and geometry
• statistics and probability.

In Year 11 and 12, the study of mathematics is optional. Courses offered include:

• Mathematics Extension 2 (Year 12 only)
• Mathematics Extension 1
• Mathematics Advanced
• Mathematics Standard 2
• Mathematics Standard 1 (Optional HSC examination)
• Mathematics Life Skills.

Overview

All students in the junior and most students in the senior school study mathematics. At Figtree high school we cater for a range of ability and interest levels for our students.

Mathematics is important and useful in many fields of endeavour. These fields include:  the sciences, medicine, economics, commerce, industry, engineering and computing just to mention some. At Figtree High School we prepare our students for a vast variety of careers including mathematics.

Mathematics provides a context within which to develop general competencies considered essential for further education, work and everyday life.

These competencies that our students learn:

• Collecting analysing and organising information

• Communicating ideas and information in an oral and written form.

• Working independently or in teams, when presenting solving or showing knowledge and skills with problems.

• Using mathematical ideas and techniques

• Using technology in particular computers to provided solutions to real life problems.
