A letter from our Principal - 23 March

A Message from the Principal

This morning the Premier of NSW held a press conference and stated the following:
1. "... in NSW we will be encouraging parents to keep their children at home."
2. "... for parents that are workers and have no option the school is safe for children to attend, schools will remain open."
3. "All students regardless of whether they are at home or school will be taught online."

Over the past week Figtree HS teachers have been creating learning activities via Google Classroom and Moodle and uploading teaching and learning material. We expect that all classes will soon be set up with either Google Classroom or Moodle.

The NSW Department of Education has provided every student with free access to Google Classroom via their student portal.

The Moodle page is accessed from the school website

Students will receive an email outlining avenues to access online learning as well as information regarding scheduled assessment tasks.  Assessment tasks, under examination conditions, will not be conducted for the time being. Teachers may use the online learning platforms for students to complete assessment tasks. Students should be accessing their school email account throughout the school day.

Students will be expected to complete all of the online learning activities. They will also be able to communicate with their teachers via these online learning means, including the submission of learning activities.

The school will work to accommodate student needs as they arise and are communicated to us. For example, if a student does not have a computer or internet access to continue their learning in an online platform at home, please contact the school.

Assessment tasks is an area that the Department of Education (DoE) and the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) will need to address over the coming days and we will keep students and parents updated as this information is available.  The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Board meets this week to determine a strategy for the HSC. We will communicate this outcome to our Year 12 students via email.

I will keep you up to date as new details progressively become clear via FHS Facebook, the school website and SkoolBag App.

Take care of yourselves and each other,

Dan Ovens
