Wellbeing
At Figtree High School, we recognise that learning and wellbeing are linked and many initiatives are implemented to support student wellbeing. Our goal is to ensure every student feels safe, known, valued and cared for, and supported to succeed. Whether your child needs assistance with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, our school community is here to help them thrive both at school and in daily life.
The Wellbeing Hub at Figtree High School is a dedicated initiative designed to provide comprehensive support throughout each student’s educational journey. This program aligns with the NSW Department of Education’s Wellbeing Framework, which promotes connection, success, and wellbeing for all students at every stage of their development.
The Wellbeing Hub is supervised by a wellbeing team member. Our staff are available to assist with a wide range of matters - from everyday concerns like family, friendships, and school challenges to more serious issues including mental health, bullying, nutrition, substance use, homelessness, child protection, and suicide prevention.
How we support student wellbeing
Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- access to school counsellors, school psychologists and specialist staff
- programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- help for students who are new or changing year levels
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.
Peer Support Program
The Peer Support Program is based on the principle that at every level and in every age group in society, people absorb information and values from each other. Peer support and positive peer influence are introduced into the school community by training Year 9 students during Term 4 to act as group leaders in Year 10 to incoming Year 7 students.
It gives Year 10 students opportunities for self-development and provides Year 7 students with a supportive environment in which to develop their own individuality. The Head Teacher Wellbeing and Student Support Officer are the contacts for this program.
Merit Award Scheme
Figtree High School values learning and encourages each student to strive to achieve their best. Individual progress and outstanding achievement is recognised and rewarded through the attainment of bronze, silver, gold and platinum merit awards:
